Carver Rec Center: Rejoining the Ranks of the Cville Fitness Scene

On a recent sunny Sunday afternoon, I stopped by the newly renovated Carver Recreation Center to take a quick tour and see what they have to offer. What I found was both impressive and surprising.

Amenities include basketball and volleyball courts, cardiovascular and strength training equipment, studios for group exercise, arts & crafts, dance, gymnastics and yoga, and a 5,000 sq. ft. multi-purpose room for activities like roller skating, teen dances and movies.

Now, let’s be honest. The words “community center” can sometimes conjure up images of a cramped, dimly lit space full of treadmills and outdated exercise machines. But the new Carver is a beautiful, modern facility with top-of-the-line equipment, a jam-packed group exercise schedule, airy studios with large windows that allow natural light to pour in, and the kind of energetic “buzz” you would hope to find in a community center.

When I stopped in for my visit, kids were laughing and playing together, adults
were working out and sharing conversation, children’s art adorned the walls in
bright, cheery colors, and everywhere I looked people were smiling and enjoying
the atmosphere and camaraderie. I realized that the new Carver is like a
reflection of Charlottesville itself – a diverse, modern place where people can share
ideas, take care of each other and have a lot of fun in the process.

One of the most exciting things about all of this is how affordable it is for a membership. For city residents, an individual adult membership costs just $39 a month. No initiation fees, no annoying term contracts. You can also choose to pay for six months or a year all at once for a better value.
And – this is big – a Carver Recreation Access Pass gives you unlimited access to Smith Aquatic & Fitness Center. That’s unlimited access to TWO fitness centers, for the price of one.

To be fair, I can’t compare the new Carver to the old Carver, because I never saw the old one. But if you’re looking for a place where you can get or stay fit while strengthening your bond with the community, then the new Carver is the place for you. Stop in and see for yourself. I promise you’ll want to go back.
