Which year was the most memorable? If there was a theme what was it? What film, experience and/or guest(s) stood out to you?

Best thing was having a group of students where we discussed films and met with filmmakers.

What sets the Virginia Film Festival apart from other film festivals you’ve attended?

The intellectual substance – the quality of the interviews, the educational component, the chances for serious reflection on issues in film. And The Adrenaline Project… completely wonderful.

Anything else you’d like to add, about yourself or the film festival?

I’ve been ridiculously lucky to have had Jody (Kielbasa) and Wes (Harris) to give me wonderful opportunities to engage films and filmmakers. And this year, Jessie (Wright) has been extremely helpful. The volunteers could not be nicer and more helpful. There’s just a kindness to everything and everyone.

Which year was the most memorable? If there was a theme what was it? What film, experience and/or guest(s) stood out to you?

Last year was the most memorable for me because the VFF premiered my first documentary film, Trolley. It was incredible because people were very enthusiastic about the film and they approached me after the screening giving me compliments, congratulating me on the selection of the topic. The best part is when they share their own experience regarding to alienation in one’s own community.

What sets the Virginia Film Festival apart from other film festivals you’ve attended?

The community, the support system that they create. They truly and appreciate the talent that young filmmakers such as myself have. It is great to be supported by the VFF. As a young artist, I am very happy that they provide the setting for me to share my films with the Charlottesville community.

Which year was the most memorable? If there was a theme what was it? What film, experience and/or guest(s) stood out to you?

My very first year was 2010. I have strong memories of the excitement and buzz that stirred around town. I went to see the opening film Black Swan and walked out of the theater speechless! I also remember balling my eyes out as I was given the opportunity to talk with Tom Shadyac after his stellar film I Am. I had forgotten how film can bring on all forms of emotion, and I was so moved by many of the movies and documentaries that year.

What film(s) are you most excited about this year?

The Sessions, Its Only (a) Natural, and Silver Linings Playbook

What’s a word of advice you would give a first timer to the Virginia Film Festival?

First Timers: Take time to review the schedule and do it as early as possible. There are so many great options so it is important to set a game plan. Also, take time to see the smaller screenings and documentaries. The Virginia Film Festival continues to bring real gems to our community. Often what may not initially spark your interest will turn out to be outstanding and engaging and it is so much fun to be pleasantly surprised!

Which year was the most memorable? If there was a theme what was it? What film, experience and/or guest(s) stood out to you?

In 2010, we had a special screening of Breaking Bad. I led a discussion with the show’s creator Vince Gilligan with an incredibly enthusiastic audience. A smitten fanboy, I had so much fun talking with him onstage. The guy’s crazy good.

What sets the Virginia Film Festival apart from other film festivals you’ve attended?

I think we strike a balance of programming that few festivals can rival. We have an incredible mix of world premieres, local works, community outreach, art films, independents, intellectuals, discussions, panels, and the best audiences anyone could hope for. What sets us apart is the caliber of participation from those who come see our films.
