Spring is in the air and that means the start of festival season, beginning with next week’s SXSW festival in Austin, Texas. Lucky for you, you can get a preview of the festival’s musical offerings without the commute! Tonight the Southern Café and Music Hall is hosting a SXSW Send-off Show featuring Charlottesville’s very own The Hill and Wood with Nettles and Luke Wilson.
Local indie-rock favorites The Hill and Wood have been on the rise and picking up momentum since their full-length, self-titled album was released in November of 2011 to overwhelmingly positive reviews. With a style reminiscent of Belle and Sebastian, Iron and Wine, and Andrew Bird, the band has refined its sound over the years into one that is familiar and polished, yet still new and full of life. The real heart and soul of the band is in front man Sam Bush’s songwriting, which is consistently strong without sounding contrived or obtrusive. The diverse instrumentation and variety of musical styles explored on the album create less of a collection of songs than a complete listening experience from start to finish, and their live show is no exception. The band is currently on a tour of the east coast and will soon head south with friends and fellow locals Nettles to play at SXSW.
The Southern will open its doors at 8 pm. Music will start at 8:30 with local singer-songwriter Luke Wilson. Tickets can be purchased at the door or online for $7. See you there!
