Mt. Vernon Farm {Nancy Bass}

Chroma Projects presents FARM USE, a group show produced in collaboration with the Piedmont Environmental Council.

The exhibition features the paintings of Nancy Bass, whose recent work documents 13 local farms that practice sustainable agriculture and humane husbandry practices. These will be auctioned as a fund raiser for the PEC. Also included in the exhibition are Millicent Young’s imaginative sculptures based on the deep interdependence between traditionally horse drawn farming implements and the invested spirit and inextinguishable presence of the animal itself in the object; UVA’s Eric Schmidt uses farm tools as the starting point for his playful interpretations on manual labor; local photojournalist O.T. Holen photographs the decaying remnants of local farmsteads; and Chroma resident artist, Robin Braun’s intimate paintings capture the haunting rural landscape in the final hours of the day.

The exhibition continues through October 22nd.

Russ Warren writes: “This exhibition deals with the nocturnal passing of time into the dawn and more optimistic views of the planet. Who knows what goes on while we sleep? These images, some friendly, some humorous, some teetering on the dark side, all come together to make a complete personality of the work’s author.”

Warren’s work has been included in countless prestigious exhibitions nationally and internationally, the Whitney Biennial and the Venice Biennale to name a few. He taught printmaking and paintings at Davidson College for 30 years. This show will feature his latest paintings, collages and drawings as well as his newest venture, ceramics.
