Tonight, The Jefferson is hosting a very special event. So, ladies, grab your girl friends, or better yet, grab some men, and make tonight one of observation and reflection.

———-

Tonight – Wednesday, February 23rd – come to The Jefferson Theater for a moving performance of “A Memory, a Monologue, a Rant, and a Prayer,” an event presented for V-Day 2011. Join participants and others as they raise awareness about violence against women. One hundred percent of the proceeds ($10 admission) will go to SARA, the Sexual Assault Research Agency.

SARA is not only a local agency that services Charlottesville,  Albemarle, and the surrounding counties, but it is also the only sexual assault crisis agency in the service area. SARA provides direct services to survivors of sexual assault, and educates schools, organizations, and the local community about sexual assault and prevention.

V-Day is a global activist movement started in 1998 by Eve Ensler, the award-winner author of The Vagina Monologues. Through the use of films, performances, and community briefings,V-Day strives to act as a catalyst “by raising money andconsciousness, it will unify and strengthen existing anti-violence efforts.”

V-Day is also extremely active internationally. Just to list a few examples, it opened the first shelters for women in Egypt and Iraq, organized the “Confronting Violence” conference of South Asian women leaders, and launched the V-Day Karama Program, which brings together activists in Egypt, Sudan, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon with the purpose of collaborating and advocating for the end of violence against women and gender equality.

V-Day believes that by “triggering far-reaching awareness, it will lay the groundwork for new educational, protective, and legislative endeavors throughout the world” with the hope of eventually reaching the ultimate goal — a “world where women live safely and freely.”

Let’s believe along with them, Cville.
