Two of Charlottesville’s finest singer-songwriters, Sam Wilson and Carl Anderson, will share the stage this Friday, February 18, at The Southern for the long-anticipated release of their respective new albums. Both Wilson and Anderson have put in countless hours over the last several months with local producer Dave Stipe, and it seems those efforts will finally pay off. Their unique brands of roots-inspired Americana are sure to impress even the most jaded of music fans.
I had the pleasure of sitting down with Anderson on Wednesday to discuss his new record and the upcoming show. Of their decision to release the records together, he explained, “we both worked with the same guy and recorded in the same space, so we figured it would only be appropriate to release on the same night. And we’re pretty good friends as well.” Though this is his first solo release, it proves a wisdom far beyond his 23 years. “It’s called 20-Something Blues, and I wanted to capture that – the essence of how difficult and frustrating it can be trying to build a career in songwriting from the ground up.” Anderson effortlessly conveys an honesty that is rare among today’s young musicians. His sound combines the comfort and familiarity of classic country with surprising new melodies and unassuming yet poetic lyrics.

Anderson also spoke of fellow musician and friend Sam Wilson, who will be releasing his second solo album Late Nights and Lonely Hearts. Perhaps best known for his role as lead guitarist of local rock band, Sons of Bill, Wilson is no stranger to the stage. According to Anderson, this new release proves Wilson has more to offer with its strong lyrical focus. “To a lot of people he’s just this amazing guitar player, which he really is, but it’s interesting to see a real prodigy of an instrument start experimenting lyrically with songwriting.” If it’s anything like 2008’s Green Gates, I have a feeling that listeners will agree.

The two will each play several tracks off of their new records, as well as a few collaborative pieces, all while accompanied by some of Charlottesville’s best. Don’t miss your chance to catch these live performances and be one of the first to buy the new records!
