Cville Niche sat down with the organizer of the event, Jonny Nuckols, to find out what exactly a Latte Art Throwdown is.
“Diehard fanaticism creates a barrier of entry,” Nuckles explained. “We want to create a more collaborative coffee community in Charlottesville.”
To break these barriers, baristas from all over Charlottesville will share their love of coffee and art as they vie for the title of best latte artist, which will be judged by the public audience that is welcome to attend. The goal is also to make the UVa Corner community aware of other coffee houses and personalities that are present in the Charlottesville community, and to experience a more diverse coffee culture.
For the baristas, it’s a $5, single elimination, head to head competition, and the coffee cups will get smaller every round.
Latte Art Throwdowns are, believe it or not, a national phenomenon, have a growing interest in Charlottesville as local coffeehouses, including Milli Joe and Mudhouse plan on creating a rotation of competitions every month. So if you love this one, don’t worry, the throwdowns will definitely throw down again.
